Hand forged hammer based on Hammer 65 from the Mastermyr find, a Viking era blacksmith's toolchest. Actually, the shape is that of 65, but the dimensions are of the slightly smaller Hammer 67. It was forged from an axle, and it wasn't quite big enough to make the 65. Forged all with hand hammers. The handle is a modified store bought hickory handle, squared with a rasp plane (I've gotten used to forging hammers with squared handles.) The handle is finished with boiled linseed oil.

Dimensions of the head:
5 5/8" long, 1 1/8" wide, 18" tall

Dimensions of the handle:
11" (to the head), 1 1/4" wide, 7/8" deep

This is the first hammer I've made.

Nick-i recieved a copy of that book today-can't stop reading it since. The detail of the entire process is mindblowing-the smelter const.,the iron making, the steel-all kinds:"natural",blister,forge-carburised...It goes on and on,with precision, references, test results(russians were not shy about cutting right in the artifacts),all sorts of micro-,and macro analysis, the works.Let me know if there's anything in particular that you may be interested in.
